Chicago to Milwaukee: sedan from $320, SUV from $450, allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours
A private sedan from downtown Chicago to Milwaukee starts at $320. An SUV starts at $450 and is useful for extra luggage or small groups. Door-to-door time usually runs 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The drive follows Lake Michigan shoreline for much of the route, and traffic leaving Chicago is the main variable. MDW Car Service is based in Chicago and arranges this route through vetted local operators.
Roads we use
Most runs head north on Interstate 90 and Interstate 94, which share the Kennedy Expressway and the Edens Expressway through Chicago. The route continues on Interstate 94 through Illinois and Wisconsin to downtown Milwaukee. For pickups in the northern suburbs, we often start on the Edens Expressway and stay on I-94. An alternative is Sheridan Road along the lake, but that route is slower and better for scenic requests than business deadlines.
Traffic reality by time of day
Morning rush northbound peaks from 7:00 to 9:00 AM. Evening southbound congestion builds from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings are the worst times because of weekend travelers. Wisconsin construction season, which runs from spring through fall, can create unpredictable delays on I-94. Winter weather along the lake can also slow the run.
When to add a buffer
For flights out of Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, leave downtown Chicago at least three hours before departure. For business meetings in downtown Milwaukee, add 30 to 45 minutes during rush hour or on Friday afternoons. Milwaukee is about 90 miles north of Chicago, but the final miles into the city can take longer than the open highway.
