Downtown Chicago to O'Hare International: sedan from $160, SUV from $160, allow 45 to 75 minutes
A private sedan from the Loop, River North, or the West Loop to O'Hare International Airport starts at $160. An SUV starts at $160 and is useful for extra luggage or small groups. Door-to-door time usually runs 45 to 75 minutes, and rush hour, terminal road construction, or lake-effect weather can push the trip toward the higher end. MDW Car Service is based in Chicago and arranges this route through vetted local operators who know the terminal access roads.
Roads we use
Most runs head northwest on the Kennedy Expressway, which carries both Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 through the city. We exit at Interstate 190 and follow the airport access roads to your terminal. If the Kennedy is locked up near the junction with the Edens, our affiliates may switch to the Eisenhower Expressway, Interstate 290, and then take the Tri-State Tollway, Interstate 294, north to I-190. Both routes are tolled on the airport side. The Kennedy is usually faster for Terminal 1, 2, and 3 departures, while I-290 to I-294 can save time for Terminal 5 or heavy outbound evenings.
Traffic reality by time of day
Morning rush toward O'Hare peaks from 7:00 to 9:00 AM. Evening outbound congestion toward O'Hare builds from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. The terminal access roads themselves can back up on Sunday evenings and early Monday mornings when business travelers return. Summer festival weekends, McCormick Place conventions, and Cubs night games at Wrigley Field add volume to the Kennedy. Winter storms can turn the Kennedy into a parking lot, especially near the junction.
When to add a buffer
For domestic flights, leave downtown two hours before departure. For international flights, leave three hours before departure. Add another 30 minutes during weekday rush or if your departure coincides with Lollapalooza in Grant Park, the Chicago Marathon, or a Bears home game at Soldier Field. TSA lines at O'Hare are unpredictable, and Terminal 5 security can be especially slow during peak international banks.
